About the Artists…

Vernon Hills High School is very proud of our Fine Arts curriculum.  There are three orchestras at VHHS with a total of 150 string students.  The orchestras meet as elective classes.  All freshmen begin in Concert Orchestra, and students advance to Philharmonic Orchestra as sophomores.  Symphony Orchestra is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors by audition. In addition, we offer more than 25 curricular courses in Visual Arts, Dance, Theater and Music.  Music courses include three choirs, three orchestras, three bands and AP Music Theory.  In addition, we offer the following extra-curricular options: jazz band, jazz strings, pit orchestra, and two vocal ensembles. Vernon Hills is located approximately 35 miles north of Chicago in Lake County, Illinois.  District 128 is a high school district consisting of two schools, Libertyville High School and Vernon Hills High School.  Vernon Hills High School opened in 1999 to relieve the overcrowding at Libertyville High School.  The current district population is just a little over 3,200 students.  Vernon Hills High School is the smaller of the two schools with only 1,360 students.

Frank Lestina received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Roosevelt University in Chicago and his Master’s Degree in Administration from the University of Illinois.  Mr. Lestina started his teaching career in Danville, Illinois in 1980 and then moved to Libertyville High School in 1986.   While at Libertyville, the orchestra performed at the Midwest Clinic twice and traveled extensively, including four tours to Europe.  In the fall of 2000, Mr. Lestina accepted the position of Fine Arts Supervisor and Orchestra Director at Vernon Hills High School.  Vernon Hills is proud to continue the District 128 tradition of excellence with a performance at the IMEA All-State Conference in Peoria in 2004 and tours to China in 2001, Spain in 2006 and Italy in 2008.  Most recently, the Symphony Orchestra was invited to perform at the MENC National Conference in Milwaukee this April.  Mr. Lestina is very active as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator.   He is a member of American String Teachers Association and very active in the Illinois Music Educators Association having served as the District 7 President for six years.
